Today’s Escape, like most other street use SUVs, is now a crossover. This means it still retains the size of an SUV and some design elements, but it also uses car elements. This also means it is primarily designed for street use, not off road use. Because of this design, the suspension is tuned for street use as well. This allows the Escape to be as comfortable riding down the road as a sedan or wagon.

Today’s Escape provides more passenger room and more room for each person’s luggage. It manages this while still allowing for decent headroom and legroom for driver and passenger comfort. With the size of the current Escape, an Explorer is still a great option, but will likely be overkill for most families.
Mileage
SUVs have never been known for getting good fuel mileage. This is due to their large size, inefficient designs, and massive engines. Now, however, SUVs are lighter while still retaining most of the interior room and use less fuel by having smaller engines and being far more aerodynamic. The 2017 Ford Escape is rated at 23/30mpg with the 1.5L gasoline engine option. This is better than most sedans from the early 2000’s.
