What is the element in a hot water heater?

by | Dec 2, 2022 | Plumbing

A typical conventional water heater is little more than a large tank, inside the tank there is a heating element which, once energized, raises the water temperature in the tank to that which is desired and keeps it there.

The element is a metal rod or tube which is directly in the water, the element is brought up to heat with electricity. Periodically this element will need to be replaced, when this happens it is highly recommended that the task be undertaken by a company that specializes in repairing hot water heater in Charlotte, NC. When a heating element does fail it is almost always metal which is subject to corrosion, a ceramic element is more efficient and will not corrode.

How does the system work?

The temperature of the water is set by the homeowner; the element is that which maintains the temperature. When hot water is being used, it is replaced with cold water from the source, when this happens the heater is energized, the rod heats up and the water is brought back to the desired temperature. This cycle is repeated every time hot water is used in the house.

When it is necessary to repair a water heater, the plumber will first drain off all the water in the tank and disconnect it from the electric power supply. Once the tank is empty, the plumber can easily unscrew the heating element from its fitting and install a replacement.

As you can appreciate, if the hot water heater uses gas rather than electric there is no need for an element, a flame heats the water using the same principle; as water is drawn off and replaced it must be heated again.

A homeowner will know when he or she has to arrange for water heater repair in Charlotte NC, the water will be cold and stay cold.
