How to clear a blocked drain

Dealing with a clogged drain is not a lot of fun, and it can be terribly messy. Before you call a specialist in drain cleaning in Avon IN , there are a few things that you can try at home.

Cover the vents:

Other than for kitchen sinks, almost every bathroom basin, bathtub and laundry tubs have a vent. In homes with back to back bathrooms, they may be sharing a common drain and there will be vents in the adjoining room as well. Before you attempt to move the clog with a plunger, these vents must be covered by sticking a wet cloth into them. If the vents are left open, the plunger will simply blow back through the vent and have little or no effect on the clog.

Fill the sink:

Fill the clogged sink with sufficient water to completely cover the plunger rubber head. To create a better seal, a slight coating of petroleum jelly helps. Slide the plunger over the drain opening and then swiftly pump the plunger down and up, repeat this. You will feel water moving in the drain, it is the action of this plug of water that will eventually dislodge the hair and soap scum which usually is what is blocking the drain. After a number of pumps, pull the plunger off the drain hole with a swift jerk; water should rush out of the drain, indicating that drain cleaning Avon IN has worked. If this fails, try it again two or three times before trying a different approach.

Chemicals:

If you cannot dislodge the clog with a plunger, then try chemical drain cleaners. If the drain is 100% blocked, using chemical cleaners is not recommended as the chemicals can damage the fittings if they are in pouch over an extended period of time. When the drain is completely blocked, an auger is recommended. The auger can first be inserted into the sink drain, remove the strainer or pop-up stopper and insert the auger into the drain. Fasten the thumbscrew on the auger and slowly begin to rotate, as the auger moves forward, release the thumbscrew and move it backwards so that more auger can enter the drain.

The auger:

If the auger cannot move the blockage by entering from the drain, the remove the plug from the bottom of the P trap which is the curved section of pipe under the sink. You may be able to dislodge the clog with a coat hanger but if it is out of reach, insert the auger into the opening in the P trap and proceed as previously instructed. When you hit the clog, continue to turn while slowly withdrawing the auger.
The most effective method of drain cleaning in Avon IN is water jetting which is a service offered by most professional plumbing companies in the area.
