A courier is in essence just a messenger. So how are messages sent? It all starts by using your vocal chords and body language. Two thirds of communication nowadays is non-verbal and instead involves all five senses. Communication can also be transmitted by the sending of messages, document, parcels and letters. The importance of a service that can efficiently transfer these messages from one party to another has become increasingly important. There are an increasing number of couriers service provider in Brent such as Deadline Couriers that can assist people with their delivery requirements.

Early days of communication

Egypt and Persia were the first countries to operate a modern form of delivery services as long ago as 2000 BC. The services were mainly for government despatches and were delivered by horsemen or on horse drawn carts. The Chinese postal system started during the Chou Dynasty (1122-221 BC) to convey official documents by couriers who changed horses every nine miles. The Roman Empire lays claim to establishing the postal service in the Mediterranean and in Europe with riders that could cover 170 miles in a 24 hour period. This speed of service was not surpassed until the 19th century. The empire building nations of France, Spain, Portugal and of course Great Britain all had the need for a speedy international postal service with France being the hub for international commerce and news.

The British Postal Service

The year of 1635 saw King Charles 1 introduce postal services in the United Kingdom. Before 1840 the postal system was complex and expensive and the charge for the services was paid by the recipient. It was not until later that Rowland Hill’s plan for prepaid postage stamps was introduced and the world famous penny black came into existence. Letter boxes, as a means of collecting mail were first introduced to Jersey in 1852, followed by four more in Guernsey later that year. 1853 saw the start of the introduction of these boxes in the rest of the country. These early cast iron boxes were all painted green, in order not to appear obtrusive. 1874 saw the colour changed to pillar box red and this process took ten years to complete nationwide!
