Homeopathic and naturopathic medicine is a very difficult field to get involved in as a patient. On the one hand, it is a potentially extremely healthy option, cutting out many of the dangerous drugs peddled by pharmaceutical companies and attempting to take control of your own health by approaching it naturally. However, natural medicine doesn’t have the same oversights involved as more traditional medicine, so it’s easy to fall for scam artists and quacks who won’t do anything for your health and will take advantage of you. How can you determine which professionals are interested in your wellbeing, though, and which ones simply want to take you for a ride?

Look at the Licensing
While there is no federal organization for certifying homeopathic doctors, that does not mean that certification doesn’t exist. Some provinces will require that homeopathic doctors be licensed through the state, so find out if you’re in one of those areas. Finding the best naturopathic doctors in Ajax, ON, for example, would first take looking at Ontario’s licensing practices. Even if your area doesn’t require such certification, there are still independent organizations that certify naturopathic doctors. This type of certification might be an even better indicator; if everyone has to be certified, then that’s simply what is done, but if it is an option, and your doctor is certified anyway, then that shows they really want to prove that they are worth the time and money.

Ask About their History
When you see a doctor, of whatever kind, want to know what their history of treating patients is like. Go to a consultation with a homeopathic doctor that you are considering, and ask a few preliminary questions. Find out what kind of training that they have, whether that be work experience or through an institution. Find out how long a doctor has been in practice, and whether they’ve had any commendations or accolades. In particular, ask for recommendations, so you can find out what past patients think of them. Finally, you can look them up online, and see what kind of reviews they have.

If you’re trusting someone with your healthcare, you have to be absolutely sure you are choosing the right path. Be sure to be discerning, ask questions, and do your research before you sign up with anyone’s practice. It takes a little more work than simply seeing a primary care doctor, but the benefits of naturopathy can definitely be worth it.
